Jake Lucky is one of the first big personalities to highlight the issue and raise concerns that Modern Warfare 2 has a false ban problem. He revealed on Twitter that hundreds of players have told him of their accounts, including people he knew personally. Activision Blizzard’s support channels have provided little help as well. Thus, it’s still unclear why Modern Warfare 2 is permanently banning players for using “unauthorized software and manipulation of game data.”

Most chalked it up to an unoptimized RICOCHET anti-cheat software and the bans as isolated incidents. But, as the number of people who are getting banned continues to grow, it’s no longer worth speculating about. Activision Blizzard needs to do something. If it’s any consolation, previous Call of Duty games faced the same issues. At the time, Activision Blizzard explained that the bans resulted from using recording and overclocking software. It’s possible that this remains the case for Modern Warfare 2. Precedence suggests that Activision Blizzard will eventually reverse the bans. Unfortunately, it might be a while for Infinity Ward to issue a fix for this particular issue. The best course of action right now is to avoid getting banned in Modern Warfare 2. The obvious way is to stop using malicious software. If you plan on cheating in Modern Warfare 2 or modifying in-game files to your advantage, know that RICOCHET works if too well. But, if you’re a straight arrow, other things you can do are to stop using unnecessary software and running them in the background while playing Modern Warfare 2, such as overclocking tools, recording software, and more. This doesn’t guarantee that you won’t get banned from Modern Warfare 2, but it does minimize the chances of a wrongful accusation. From the looks of it, Activision Blizzard and Infinity Ward are treating the period between now and November 16 as an extended beta test for Modern Warfare 2. It will be interesting to see if the same problems still exist once Season 1 of Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 are out next month.
