The popular actor made this revelation during an interview with Big Issue to promote his recently released holiday film Spirited, a modern retelling of Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol. Deadpool 2 was released over four years ago and, according to Reynolds’ revelations, fans of the antihero could have gotten a Christmas special within that time as the actor, Wernick, and Reese had completed the script and handed it to Disney. Unfortunately, “It got lost in the shuffle of Disney acquiring Fox,” in the words of the 46-year-old actor. Nevertheless, he remains hopeful he will portray the anti-hero in a festive feature sometime in the future. When discussing the now-canceled feature, the Red Notice star stated the film would’ve had a song-and-dance number. However, there was no risk it would have been a musical. The actor admitted he wasn’t interested in making another full musical project following his latest holiday flick due to their complexity. In his words, “I don’t know if I would [make a musical] again. I don’t think so. They’re just such vastly different disciplines. When you haven’t spent your life at a craft like song and dance, you’re just always playing catch up. Thank God, we have 10, 15, 30, 50 takes to get it right.” Even though Reynolds’s Deadpool project may not see the light of day, Marvel gave us a hint of what a Christmas-themed Deadpool project would look like with its PG-13 cut of Deadpool 2 titled Once Upon a Deadpool. The edited sequel was quite short but showed that it’s possible to make a Deadpool film with minimal violence and foul language. Following Deadpool 2, the next major Deadpool project is the highly anticipated Deadpool 3, which was undergoing production when Disney bought 21st Century Fox. At the time of the takeover, many fans worried that the Deadpool franchise would end. However, Disney CEO Bob Iger allayed fans’ fears and confirmed that the third installment will still happen. He also stated that Disney would integrate the character into the MCU. Reynolds most recently revealed the release date for the third installment of the Merc with a Mouth. He also revealed the return of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, who has not featured in a Marvel film since the release of Logan in 2017. While we’ve no idea how Wolverine be in the film, especially given his death in 2017’s Logan, fans were nevertheless ecstatic. Logan’s director James Mangold also approved of Wolverine’s return, saying “LOGAN will always be there. Multiverse or prequel, time warp or wormhole, canon or non-canon or even without a rationale, I cannot wait to see what madness my dear friends [Reynolds] and [Jackman] cook up!” Deadpool 3’s plot details are currently under wraps. However, it’s believed it will incorporate different Marvel films, including the Fantastic Four series, in a bid to overcome Danger, a powerful robot based on X-Men’s Danger Room. In addition to Reynolds and Jackman, the film will reportedly bring back Owen Wilson and Zazie Beetz, who will reprise their roles as Mobius and Domino, respectively. In other Marvel news, James Gunn has debunked rumors that the Silver Surfer will have a cameo appearance in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. Also, Marvel’s recently released Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is performing lower than expected at the box office.
