Sam Raimi’s initial Spider-Man trilogy from the 2000s was a seminal project that effectively solidified the status of comic book movies as blockbuster hits. Unfortunately, following the critical failure of 2007’s Spider-Man 3, Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire, as well as the rest of the cast and crew, would never get a chance to do a fourth despite there being a video game tie-up already in development. Fast forward to 2022 and it appears that Spider-Man 4 might just happen. Sam Raimi, who is directing Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, teased that the introduction of the multiverse, a plot device that lets directors bring in actors and actresses from other non-Disney Marvel films, means that “anything is possible”, including the return of Tobey Maguire in a fourth Spider-Man film. Naturally, fans took this opportunity to tag Sony to greenlight the idea for the aforementioned film. Of course, as Sony’s social media team already clarified before in a response to calls for The Amazing Spider-Man 3, approving which movies get made and which ones don’t are way above their paygrade, before asking fans to stop mentioning the @Sony channel on Twitter going forward.
friendly reminder, we’re just the social team! — Sony (@Sony) April 6, 2022 Sony has never officially acknowledged nor denied any plans for a new Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man trilogy. However, the constant fan demand on social media should give Sony Pictures Releasing, the division responsible for overseeing the company’s film production business, a reason to think about it. Sony’s Spider-Man Universe is lacking a flagship web-slinging and either one of Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield should fit well within the said cinematic universe. With Morbius doing well at the global box office and the third Venom film confirmed along with Madame Web as well as Kraven the Hunter live-action adaptations, the SSMU needs a Spider-Man. Given that all the parties that could be potentially involved in a new installment to any of the defunct Spider-Man franchises seem open to the idea, Sony will be wasting the chance of a lifetime if it doesn’t grab the opportunity. For now, fans can catch Raimi’s latest work on May 6 as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hits theaters. With its incredibly long theatrical runtime, the upcoming MCU film has all that it needs to bring in every cameo imaginable, which could include Wanda Maximoff’s twin children, among others. Speaking of Spider-Man, the web-slinger will be a mainstay in mainstream media for the foreseeable future. Despite Tom Holland’s “break” from the MCU following the events of No Way Home, the first part of the sequel to 2018’s award-winning animated Spider-Man film, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, will premiere in theaters on October 7, 2022. Afterward, gamers can look forward to Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 in 2023.
