Cinematographer Duane Charles Manwiller recently posted a photo on Instagram of the clapperboard used during the filming of Madame Web. Manwiller wrote, “Coming soon (kind of) to a theatre near you.” Manwiller also confirmed that the upcoming Spider-Man spinoff finished filming. Filming for Madame Web started in July and appears to have just wrapped up a few days ago. Manwiller worked on the film as the director of photography. Madame Web will be headlining Sony’s superhero lineup for 2024. The upcoming film stars Dakota Johnson in the first-ever live-action adaptation of the Marvel character. Cassandra Webb is a blind and paralyzed mutant with psychic and precognitive powers. Web suffers from myasthenia gravis, a neuromuscular illness that leaves patients blind and paralyzed. Her husband designed a life support system for her that looks like spider legs. In the comics, Madame Web was first introduced when Spider-Man approached her to track down a publisher for the Daily Globe. The heroine successfully helped the web crawler and, in the process, learned his true identity as Peter Parker. She often uses her psychic abilities to aid Spider-Man in his battles. Madame Web’s main weakness is her illness, which confines her to the mechanical device that acts as her life support. Starring alongside Johnson in Madame Web is Sydney Sweeney, who will reportedly play Julia Carpenter in the film. Carpenter is also known as Spider-Woman in the comic books. It will be interesting to see if Carpenter appears in other Spider-Man-related films like the upcoming Spider-Man 4. The cast for Madame Web also includes Mike Epps, Tahar Rahim, Isabela Merced, Celeste O’Connor, Zosia Mamet, and Emma Roberts. Adam Scott will be playing Uncle Ben in upcoming film. Madame Web will be part of Sony’s Spider-Man universe which already introduced Tom Hardy’s Venom and Jared Leto’s Morbius. Sony will add Kraven the Hunter and El Muerto to the Spider-verse in the coming year. Madame Web is directed by S.J. Clarkson with the screenplay written by Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama. Clarkson previously worked as a director for Marvel’s Jessica Jones and The Defenders Netflix TV series. The director has also been tapped to direct a Game of Thrones prequel series. Madame Web will be opening in theaters on February 16, 2024.
