Recently, Groot starred in a series of animated shorts called “I am Groot “. The series is part of Phase 4 and premiered on Disney+. Fans and critics have praised the series and dubbed it as one of the greatest animated shorts on Disney+. With the success of the animated shorts, Vin Diesel, the voice behind Groot, reveals that Marvel Studios wants to make a film based on Groot’s homeworld called Planet X. In an Instagram post, Diesel said “It was a blast making, but it’s also a blast watching it with my angels. No wonder Marvel wants to make the Planet X movie.”

I am Groot

There are two Groots in the MCU, with the original appearing in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Groot belongs to a species called Flora colossus and is known to be its last surviving member. The sentient tree-like being is a known associate of the mercenary Rocket. Groot and Rocket were trying to capture Star-Lord aka Peter Quill who was fighting Gamora. In the chaos, they were all arrested and eventually sent to prison. The four teamed up with Drax the Destroyer to escape prison and became commonly known as the Guardians of the Galaxy. Groot died while protecting his teammates from Ronan the Accuser. Rocket plants a sapling that eventually becomes Baby Groot. According to director James Gunn, Baby Groot (or Groot II) is a separate character and the offspring of the original Groot. Baby Groot was introduced in the post-credits of Guardians of the Galaxy dancing to the tune of “I Want You Back " by the Jackson 5. Groot II has appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy Volume II, Avengers: Endgame, and Thor: Love and Thunder. A standalone film for Groot, which surely would be a hit, seems farfetched at this point. While Marvel Studios certainly has the budget for it, there will be some serious time constraints for a Planet X movie if it will be part of the current Multiverse Saga timeline. A visual effects-heavy full-length feature film would take several years to complete. Marvel Phase 4 ends with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Phase 5 for the MCU kicks off with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and is packed full of movies and TV shows. Groot will be part of Phase 5 with Guardians of the Galaxy Volume III and the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. The Holiday Special has finished filming and will premiere in December 2022. Volume III will open in theaters on May 5, 2023. Fans of the I am Groot series will also be happy as creator Kirsten Lepore has revealed that Groot will be appearing in five more animated shorts. The I am Groot animated shorts can be streamed on Disney+.
